Description

Kansas City University (KCU) has put together an outstanding Continuing Education (CE) program for its 2025 Homecoming. The sessions include topics that are current, relevant, and important to physicians and medical professionals. The presenters feature some new faces as well as popular, seasoned conference speakers.  All will be providing updates in medicine. 

If you are a KCU Alum, and plan on attending the non-CE events, make sure you have also registered at kansascity.edu/homecoming

Dates

The CE sessions will take place live, in-person from October 16, 2025-October 18, 2025 for a total of 20 hours of content. KCU will provide 12 hours of in-person content and 8 hours of pre-recorded content to those who register for a total of 20 hours of CE.  

The live, in-person CE presentations will be recorded and available on-demand starting October 22, 2025.

All recoded and on-demand presentations will be available until December 7, 2025. There will be no exceptions to this deadline, so please plan ahead.

Location

The live, in-person CE presentations will take place in the following locations:

  • October 16, 2025, will take place at the Courtyard by Marriott at Briarcliff.
  • October 17, 2025, will take place on the KCU Campus in Kansas City.
  • October 18, 2025, will take place at the Courtyard by Marriott at Briarcliff.

Accreditation Statement

The event has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) through the joint providership of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and Kansas City University (KCU). MAOPS is accredited by the AOA and ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA (Allopathic) Credit Designation

MAOPS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

MAOPS designates this activity for a maximum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the in-person or online activity.

AOA (Osteopathic) Credit Designation

MAOPS is accredited by the AOA to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 20 AOA Category 1-A CME Credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this in-person or online activity.

ADA (Dental) Credit Designation

KCU College of Dental Medicine is an American Dental Association (ADA) Continuing Education Recognition Program (CERP) recognized provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual activities or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.

Specific sessions held throughout the event are available to dental professionals for ADA CE credits.  

Planning Committee

The KCU CME Committee members serve as the CME Planning Committee for this conference. Membership of the committee includes faculty and staff from KCU and may include physicians from local communities. Members of the committee are listed on the KCU CME webpage at https://www.kansascity.edu/programs/continuing-medical-education.

Grievance Policy

All grievances should be in writing and specify the nature of the grievance.  Initially, a grievance should be directed to the KCU Continuing Education Director, who will then forward say grievance to the CME Committee.  Grievances should be addressed to the KCU CME Director at cme@kansascity.edu.  All grievances will receive an initial response from KCU within 30 days of receipt. KCU will resolve the grievance, if possible. 

If the DO or MD participant does not receive a satisfactory response from KCU, they can then submit the grievance in writing to KCU’s accredited sponsor, the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS). Grievances should be addressed to the MAOPS Executive Director at 1423 Randy Lane, Jefferson City, MO 65101.  All grievances will receive a response from MAOPS in writing within 30 days of receipt.  MAOPS will resolve the grievance, if possible.

A third generation Osteopathic Physician, Dr. Treffer earned his DO degree from KCU-COM in 1987 and completed a Rotating Internship at University Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in 1988.  He is board certified in Osteopathic Family Practice by the AOBACOFP and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine by the AOBNMM/OMM. He earned his Fellow award from the ACOFP in 2013. He has served as full time OMM faculty for 28 years as of July 20, 2020 and has helped train over 5500 Osteopathic Physicians at KCU.  He is the Chair of the Department of OMM for KCU-COM (KC and Joplin Campuses).  He maintains a Specialty Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine practice here in Kansas City at the KC Care Health Care Center.   He authored a chapter in Waldman Pain Management Textbook on the Osteopathic Approach to the Chronic Pain Patient, editions 1 and 2.  He is a member of AACOM’s Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles since 1992 and served as the Chair of the Council from 2011 to 2015.  He has given numerous lectures and workshops covering multiple OMM topics on a local, regional and national level.  He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Mentor Hall of Fame for the AOA.  He received the 2002 Family Physician of the Year award from the Missouri Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and was the 2018 KCU-COM Alumnus of the year.

John P. Smith, DO, FACOS, is past chairman of the KCU Board of Trustees. Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1971 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1975.

Following his medical education at KCU, Dr. Smith completed a transitional rotating internship at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and a four-year general surgery residency at Normandy Osteopathic Hospitals in St. Louis, Mo. He also completed a one-year fellowship in clinical nutrition in Chicago, IL. 

Over the years, Dr. Smith has served in numerous professional societies and committees, including the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, where he served on the Board of Governors, is a past president and holds fellowship status.

Dr. Nicole Fremarek serves as an Assistant Professor of Primary Care at Kansas City University (KCU). Her medical passions include osteopathic sports medicine, cheer and dance medicine, integrative medicine, and orthobiologic treatments.

Dr. Fremarek is also a fellowship-trained and board-certified Osteopathic Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician at Sano Specialty Care. She specializes in the musculoskeletal system, sports medicine, diagnostic ultrasound, and orthobiologics. Her clinical focus includes athletic injury prevention, concussion management, and providing care for athletes of all ages.

A native of Homer Glen, IL, Dr. Fremarek earned her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She attended medical school at KCU while simultaneously obtaining an MBA in Healthcare Leadership from Rockhurst University. Dr. Fremarek completed dual residencies in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, followed by a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine in Blacksburg, VA, where she worked extensively with Virginia Tech (ACC) and Radford University (Big South) Athletics. Her training includes advanced expertise in diagnostic ultrasound and non-operative musculoskeletal treatments. Over the past decade, she has gained invaluable experience under renowned mentors, honing her skills to deliver comprehensive care to athletes across various sports.

Jonathan Leo is the Chair of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at Kansas City University.  He received his PhD from the University of Iowa where he studied the effect of alcohol on the developing brain. He has taught Medical Gross Anatomy and Medical Neuroanatomy at medical schools for 25 years. He has also served as the Director of a master’s and PhD program in Anatomical Sciences and was an Associate Dean of Students for many years. He has won numerous teaching awards. During this time, he has lectured as a board reviewer for 20 years and has lectured to medical students throughout the United States, Caribbean, Middle East, Europe, India, and China. She enjoys teaching her patients and learning from them as well. Dr. Richter practices Family Medicine with Obstetrics in Lenexa, Kansas, and delivers babies at the Birth Center of Overland Park Regional Medical Center in the Kansas City metro area.

Dr. Richter was born and raised in the St. Louis area and is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL. After medical school, she moved to Kansas City and completed her residency at the University of Missouri – Kansas City Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Ross Newman is a pediatrician in the Division of General Academic Pediatrics at Children’s Mercy Hospital and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.  He is a graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and pediatrics residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital.  He has an interest in evidence-based medicine and worked with the Children’s Mercy Hospital Office of Evidence Based Medicine helping develop clinical practice guidelines and serving as the resident educational lead for teaching evidence-based medicine.  His focus includes resident education, and he joined the Department of Graduate Medical Education as an Associate Program Director for the Pediatrics Residency Program in 2012 before taking on his current role of Program Director in 2016.  During this time, he earned his Masters in Health Professions Education from UMKC.

Still University in Kirksville, MO, residency at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, MO, and post-graduate fellowship at University of North Texas Health Science Center.  After completing his fellowship, he transitioned from teaching residents to teaching second year medical students at Kansas City University- Joplin Campus.  While on faculty at KCU, Dr. Nichols has been the course director for the Year 2 Osteopathic Skills course and a Transition to Clerkship course focused on preparing 2nd year students for their rotations.  Dr. Nichols has previously served as a lecturer and editor for Doctors In Training, an independent board-prep resource. 

He currently spends his work time developing curriculum for and preparing 2nd year medical students for their clinical years, directing OMM fellows, and conducting research.  Dr. Nichols also hold a non-opioid pain management clinic at a local Federal Community Health Center. 

Dr. Nichols is a self-proclaimed Missourian for life. He has three little girls with his wife Jourdan and loves to teach.   He interests include regenerative medicine, health and wellness, and pinball.

Dr. Marcus Iszard is a pharmacologist and toxicologist with over 25 years of experience in higher education and more than two decades of forensic and investigative consultation in pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutics. He has provided expert testimony and legal deposition in both state and federal courts, and under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) for the United States Army and the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.

His academic career includes extensive teaching of pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutics to pharmacy, medical, dental, and nursing students, with a focus on clinical, research, and investigative applications. Dr. Iszard has also developed and delivered specialized curricula, including the "Investigative Toxicology" course at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy (2010–2013), and a Continuing Legal Education (CLE)-accredited program titled Basic Use and Application of Toxicolegal Science Information with Guidelines for Investigating Drug-Related Cases (Missouri Bar: 6.8 CLE hours; Kansas CLE Commission: 6.5 CLE hours).

Dr. Iszard holds advanced degrees (MS and PhD) in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Florida A&M University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics. He is licensed as a private investigator in the State of Kansas (License #D-6161) and serves as an item writer for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME).

Joseph Williams, EdD, MS serves as the Director of College of Osteopathic Medicine Assessment and Analytics and Assistant Professor at Kansas City University. In this role, he leads data-driven initiatives to enhance academic performance, curriculum quality, and student success within the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Prior to joining KCU, Dr. Williams spent over 16 years at Missouri State University, where he progressed from Senior Instructor to Assistant Professor. His teaching experience spans large-scale lecture courses, such as Human Anatomy and Human Biology, to highly focused cadaver anatomy laboratories and skill-based cell and molecular biology labs. He has also been active in scholarly work exploring noninvasive metrics for metabolic syndrome prevention and developing innovative approaches to general education assessment.

Dr. Williams earned a Doctor of Education (EdD) from Creighton University, as well as both a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from Missouri State University. He holds additional training in Python for Non-Programmers, reflecting his commitment to leveraging technology for educational improvement.

Dedicated to both scientific rigor and student-centered teaching, Dr. Williams brings a blend of research expertise, instructional innovation, and data analytics to the field of medical education.

Dr. John L. Visconti is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine and serves as Medical Director of the Siteman Cancer Center in Shiloh, Illinois. He specializes in breast and genitourinary oncology, bringing over 25 years of experience in cancer care and research to his patients.

Dr. Visconti is board-certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Kansas City University (formerly the University of Health Sciences) College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri, and completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center.

Before joining Washington University in 2018, Dr. Visconti served as an Associate Physician at Illinois Oncology Ltd. for over a decade, where he also held the position of Principal Investigator of Research Activities. His extensive academic background includes previous faculty appointments at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where he taught medical students and residents while conducting clinical research.

Dr. Visconti has contributed significantly to cancer research, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national conferences. His research has focused on advanced treatments for various cancers, including breast, colorectal, pancreatic, and genitourinary malignancies. He has been involved in multiple clinical trials investigating novel chemotherapy combinations and treatment approaches.

Throughout his career, Dr. Visconti has been recognized for his clinical excellence and dedication to patient care. He was awarded Matthew B. Eisele, MD Physician Excellence Award in 2024 and has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Illinois from 2022 to present.

Dr. Visconti maintains active memberships in the American Osteopathic Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the St. Clair County Medical Society.
