Welcome, and thank you for joining us for KCU Graduate Medical Education (GME) Grand Rounds for 2021-2022.

Allopathic Accreditation and Credit Designation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and Kansas City University (KCU).  MAOPS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

MAOPS designates this activity for a maximum of 9 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Osteopathic Accreditation and Credit Designation

Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 9 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Grievance Policy

All grievances should be in writing and specify the nature of the grievance.  Initially, a grievance should be directed to the KCU Graduate Medical Education Director, who will then forward said grievance to the CME Committee.  Grievances should be addressed to the KCU GME Director at cme@kansascity.edu.  All grievances will receive an initial response from KCU within 30 days of receipt. KCU will resolve the grievance, if possible. 

If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response from KCU, they can then submit the grievance in writing to the KCU’s accredited sponsor, the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS). Grievances should be addressed to the MAOPS Executive Director at 1423 Randy Lane, Jefferson City, MO 65101.  All grievances will receive a response from MAOPS in writing within 30 days of receipt.  MAOPS will resolve the grievance, if possible. 

If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response from MAOPS, they can then submit the grievance in writing to the Council on Continuing Medical Education of the AOA at 142 E Ontario St., Chicago, IL 60611.

 

Non-physician professionals should check with their individual credentialing bodies to confirm that participation in this CME activity will be approved for credit.

 

Continuing Medical Education Certificate

Attendees may view and print certificates for completed activities via the Course tab.  After you have participated in all of the sessions, you will click on the Evaluation request your certificate for the entire program.  You do not need to complete the CME Certificate for each session, and can only one certificate for the overall program.  The certificate will reflect your name, accredited CME provider, title of activity, and total number of Credits™ awarded.

Dr. Orth is a graduate of KCU, and has been in practice 29 years within the Kansas City Metro. He is one of 12 surgeons within Orthopedic Surgeons Inc. (OSI) and practices general orthopedics. He is the Program Director of Orthopaedics with KCU/ HCA Health Care Kansas City. He is active in the orthopaedic surgery community, being a fellow of and serving as the secretary treasurer of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO). He also chairs the Program Director Section of the AOAO, and has served as a member of ACGME Orthopaedic Milestones 2.0 committee.

His practice of general orthopaedic surgery affords him excellent exposure to all areas of this field. He utilizes his skills to teach students, orthopaedic residents, family medicine residents, and family medicine sports medicine fellows how to be comfortable and knowledgeable in this field. It is a pleasure being able to help patients, students, residents and fellows to reach their potential, and continuing to make our profession stronger with knowledge and compassion for others.

Donald Smith, DO's Profile

Dr. Smith went to Texas Tech University School of Medicine.  He then did his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Texas program in Conroe, Texas.  After completion of his training in 1991 he moved to Indiana.  Most recently he was in private practice with the Indiana University Health system at their office in French Lick, Indiana for several years.  In 2019 he moved to Richmond, Indiana and joined the Reid Health Family Medicine residency program as a core faculty member.  His primary areas of responsibility include precepting in the outpatient clinic, teaching the Geriatrics rotation and supervising the monthly nursing home visits the residents perform.

Dr. Dale Sanders serves as the Director of the Healthcare Administration Program and as an Associate Professor of Healthcare Administration/Business Administration, at Alma College.
Dr. Sanders is active in the community. He serves on the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) State Health Needs Assessment Task Force; the Mid-Michigan District Health Department Gratiot County Community Health Assessment Steering Committee; the Great Lakes Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives; United Financial Credit Union, Saginaw, Michigan, Board of Directors Credit Committee; and is a Guest Lecturer for the Student National Medical Association Annual Medical Education Conference.
In his spare time, Dr. Sanders research activities and interests include a comprehensive evaluation of system thinking, when approaching health disparities and health outcomes of marginalized communities. This research explores the effects of cultural competency and diversity training for students, educators, new careerist, and seasoned practitioners.

Dr. Renée Volny Darko is a Board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist. Dr. Darko graduated from Kansas City University with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Health Care Leadership from Rockhurst University. She completed her OB/GYN residency at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, then went on to the Morehouse School of Medicine where she completed a fellowship in Health Policy Leadership under the leadership of Dr. David Satcher with a focus in global reproductive health. She later served as Interim Associate Director of the fellowship. While in medical school Dr. Darko served the SNMA as the National Pre-medical Board Member and later became the Chair of the Board of the Directors. She has been bestowed the honor SNMA Chair Emeritus. She also serves as a mentor for the Tour for Diversity in Medicine and does international medical missions in Ghana, West Africa as project manager of the International Healthcare Volunteers, an organization focused on women's health. Finally, Dr. Darko is founder/CEO of Pre-med Strategies, Inc., through which she offers medical school recruiters and diversity officers creative solutions to increase the underrepresented in medicine pre-med engagement using innovative programs, cutting-edge technology, and media solutions. Dr. Darko's enterprise includes bestselling author of How Good Ol’ Dr. V Came to Be, a children’s book loosely based on her own journey to becoming a doctor. She also hosts The Total Pre-med Makeover podcast. Most recently, Dr. Renée launched MEdEq [pronounced MED-eck], which stands for medical education equity. The MEdEq program features a new app through which pre-meds who are underrepresented in medicine engage directly with medical school recruitment and diversity officers for career development and recruitment.

In the course of his career, he has been an invited keynote speaker and workshop presenter at national conferences, served as faculty, and written the curriculum used to this day in the University of Cincinnati’s civil rights practitioner certificate program. Mr. Olovson's professional experience also includes serving as counsel for Legal Services of South Central Michigan, Prison Legal Services of Michigan, the Office of the General Counsel for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, and prior to law school, as a counselor for Gratiot County Mental Health Services and Saginaw Bay Human Services. Barbara H. Miller, MD, FAAFP, is the Founding Resident Program Director in Family Medicine, KCU-GME Consortium, Freeman Health System, Joplin, MO. She graduated from the University Of Oklahoma College Of Medicine in 1999, and is board certified in Family Medicine. In addition to nine years of experience in graduate medical education, including eight years as a program director, Dr. Miller has had many diverse experiences in her 23-year career, including rural medicine, surgical obstetrics, functional medicine, and more recently medical student education in both the preclinical and clinical curricula. She has received numerous teaching awards, has been honored by the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and is a nationally recognized leader and innovator in family medicine education. She has recently been selected to participate in the American Academy of Family Practice’s National Conference on Constituency Leaders, whose goal is to empower a select group of change makers to catalyze positive change in family medicine. Barbara H. His interests include behavioral genetics, particularly as they apply to psychiatry. When he is not helping residents with research projects he enjoys cooking and spending time with his toddlers.
