Dr. Southwell graduated from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 2003 and received a doctorate in osteopathic medicine before beginning postgraduate training at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He completed a one-year medical internship followed by a three-year general neurology residency. This was followed by a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology, after which he entered private practice for approximately four years.

He joined the Neurology faculty at University of Kansas in 2013 and now practices general neurology in the University of Kansas Health System's Spine Center. He is active on the inpatient EMG service for the diagnosis of neuromuscular disease. Although he has had fellowship EMG/EEG training, he enjoys practicing general neurology and treats a wide variety of neurological conditions. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with initial certification in 2008.  He is currently Associate Professor of Neurology, and Division Chief of Community Neurology at University of Kansas Department of Neurology.
