In this didactic and experiential learning session, the learner will experience the clinic setting through the eyes of the LGBTQ patient. Research shows LGBTQ+ patients are at higher risk for mental and physical health disparities. These disparities are worsened by perceived and actual barriers to culturally competent LGBTQ healthcare. Many topics will be introduced on how to help physicians make the healthcare setting a safe and welcoming environment for their LGBTQ+ patients, including the impact of the waiting room, intake forms, patient interactions. Presenter will also use role playing and an interactive Q & A session to reinforce learning.
This presentation will help physicians gain insight and knowledge on how to create a physical environment that feels safe and welcoming for their LGBTQ patients. The physician will also learn how to introduce sensitive topics with their LGBTQ patients allowing meaningful dialogue for optimal care.
